LTE: Hats off to coaches

Lately there has been much praise for veterans, nurses, firemen. The Readers’ Digest even had an article praising truckers.. Understandably all these professions deserve credit for their hard work, but I’d like to direct your thinking to the coaches who work with the baseball league for kids.

At a time when racism is on the rise and volunteerism is dying, it’s so refreshing to watch these men and women working with children, some of whom have been pitching and batting for several years and some novices who can’t throw a ball straight. Accepting and teaching the novices, encouraging and challenging the more proficient, these coaches kindly and gently bring all the players to another level. I saw them correcting the batter’s stance, but also teaching valuable lessons of respect and cooperation. With a pat on the back for the batter who just struck out or a pat on the head to a fielder who just caught a fly ball, these men and women are teaching kids to be kind to one another and to work together.
